... is any one of several species of palm tree. The species in question here is Sabal palmetto – commonly known as the cabbage palm, or Carolina Palm, along with several other names. This is native to the southern United States and some Caribbean islands, and grows up to 20 metres in height.
South Carolina's state nickname is one of several that have their origins in the United States' conflicts with their British colonial masters. According to Britannica, palmetto logs (used in fortifications) were so strong that British cannonballs simply bounced off them.
